045 – My Van Halen Experience!

by Sam Crump on January 26, 2016

Show Notes:

This episode is about my awesome experience hanging out with Hot For Teacher, which is a Van Halen Tribute Band. My friend Steve invited me to go their 9th performance at the National Association of Music Merchants convention in Anaheim.

Not only was this an incredible experience of reliving the thrill of rock and roll from my college days, but it was also an eye-opening experience of recognizing when opportunity is right in front of me. I’m going to be writing an article about all of this and working to get it published in a national music industry magazine. This is a good lesson about taking bold action to achieve our dreams!

Thanks to the band members:

Eddie Studebaker (aka Alex Van Halen)

Randy Monroe (aka David Lee Roth)

Terry Lauderdale (aka Eddie Van Halen)

Matthew “Brooks” Lundy (aka Michael Anthony)

Rock on!

044 – A Boot Camp for Your Life

by Sam Crump on January 2, 2016

Show Notes:

My military service was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I highly recommend it for young men and women as a way to build skills and confidence; see the world; and develop camaraderie.

The model of boot camp is one where the individual is pushed beyond limits and achieves goals he didn’t think were possible. As we begin a new year, many of us are looking at ahead at things we’d like to achieve in 2016. Weight loss, careers, relationships, projects — we have goals, but often it is difficult to overcome inertia and get started on them.

I believe the boot camp model is a great one to apply to yourself. You can do this literally by joining a fitness boot camp (or the military!), but you can also do it by hiring a coach, or finding an accountability partner. Explain to them what you want to achieve; write down your goals; set regular intervals to check in and measure your progress. Sometimes spending money is a way to incentivize ourselves to take action, other times it is a declaration to another person and being held accountable.

It’s a new year, full of opportunity. I know I need to get my butt in gear and I’ll be you do, too! Let’s go!

AT-TAQADDUM, Iraq (June 7, 2008) - Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders hold a push-up competition during their routine for service members. The five cheerleaders are touring Iraq to show their support for the troops and to help boost morale. The group performed a 45 minute act which included costume changes and interaction with the service members. Their show also included a cheer-off with selected service members who received prizes at the end. The group stayed long after their performance and posed for photos after the show.
