018 – Is USA in Decline?

by Sam Crump on May 28, 2015

Show Notes:

Is USA in Decline? I think it is. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We need a return to the grit and determination that made this country great. Consider:

Education: we are doing a terrible job of educating our youth. Charter schools are a start. And if you can afford it, I recommend sending your kids or grandkids to private school.

Taxes, Government Spending, and Federal Overreach: The government has become to big and intrusive in our lives. It spends too much and our taxes are too burdensome as a result. The federal government has made the states and local governments rubber stamps. The Founding Fathers would be disappointed.

Moral Decay: Why isn’t there a national outcry about the filth that is delivered everyday from the television to our homes? There is no sense of shame anymore. And TV is nothing compared to the hardcore pornography going into every home with a computer and Internet connection. The experts say young people are watching this at an alarming rate.

The Decadent Society: Our country seems to have become one of entitlement. We want everything now, whether it is an Uber ride or an instant dinner. We’ve become soft in the middle. We are a remote control, drive-thru, disposable society.

Foreign Policy: I’m not in favor of intervening in every skirmish around the world. But I believe in American exceptionalism and there are few if any nations who are willing and/or able to do the kind of work around the world for the betterment of mankind. The globe is in chaos.

017 – Life & Death

by Sam Crump on May 20, 2015

Show Notes:

Join me on a philosophical journey on the subjects of life and death. I’ve had several recent experiences regarding death, including elderly family members and tragic losses of life. What is the meaning of these? How do we deal with death. Are some meaningful and others senseless?

The subject of life is much more uplifting, assuming we are making the most of it. I often ponder a phrase I learned that goes like this: “Life is all about how you have it and how you are being with it”. I find that a fascinating sentence and it often spurs me into action when I am feeling sorry for myself.

My recent experience with a group of exceptional young men made me want to speak to them and tell them they don’t know what the future holds for them, but they can grab life by the horns and make the most of it.

I also enjoyed the final episode of Mad Men. I saw a lot of parallels with some of the themes in the show and my own upbringing. At the end of the day, we are the ones responsible for our own lives. Every day really is a new beginning. It is up to us whether we are going to be victims or whether we are going to make our time on earth count.

016 – Buzzy Martin: Musician, Author, Movie Star?

May 14, 2015

Show Notes: I love music – all kinds of music. I especially admire musicians who are passionate about what they do. Sometimes they make it big, sometimes they don’t. And sometimes, that’s not even what it’s about. I’ve recently been getting into the new rock band, Alabama Shakes. Not only do I like their music, […]

I’ve been doing some traditional spring cleaning, like getting the garage in order and moving my law office stuff to my home office. Wow, does it […]
